I wouldn’t call any of the above spam, and I don’t consider it spam if I know the sender personally. To tell the truth, I’ve never really thought of it before in that light. When my new writing book came out, I sent out an e-mail to a lot of friends telling them about it (using blind copy so the other names wouldn’t show). I think I heard back from almost all of them, thanking me for it, ordering it, congratulating me, or some such reply. I never thought of it as being spam but, according to the definition, I guess it was as it was unsolicited.

1. An email from someone you know on your Yahoo group asking you to check out their vitamin website in reply to your post that said you were sick.
IF I was asking for ideas to get well, I would not consider it spam.
IF I just mentioned the illness, the post would be annoying, but I wouldn’t consider it spam, and wouldn’t report it. If the group has rules against mentioning a business, I’d let the moderator deal with it.2. A Twitter auto reply that thanks you for following them and asks you to visit their website.
If I’m already following them, then there is a relationship, and I would not consider it spam.3. A phone call from a really good friend who just went into business asking you to buy from them.
This is so annoying and irritating, and when this happens, I feel like they’re taking advantage of the “friendship.” Letting me know about their new business is fine, but it’s totally different if they push me to buy from them.4. A Facebook friend who only posts when they have something to sell.
I wouldn’t report, but I’d definitely unfriend and block them.5. A Twitter follower who only replies to you when they can talk about something they sell.
I would probably report and block them. -
I would say yes to all except #2. I’ve had that happen and that doesn’t mean it is a turn off for me visiting their site – I just see them as busy and having a lot of followers. I hate spam too – I dislike friends trying to sell me something or promote their latest ‘mission trip’ for me to contribute to. If I had a nickel…It’s annoying and they do not usually want to connect with you – just want to promote themselves.
