Are you making great time, but not sure where you're going?

Are You Making Great Time, But Not Sure Where You're Going?

I subscribe to a lot of fun things and several of them have quotes from the rich and famous.  Yogi Berra is one of my favorites because there is so much wisdom in his humor.  I don't know for sure if he meant them all to be funny or if it just worked out that way, but there is much to be learned here.

"Yeah, but we're making great time!" -- Yogi Berra, In reply to "Hey Yogi, I think we're lost."

I got to thinking about this quote of his and it struck me that there was even more wisdom in there than I had originally spotted.  At first glance, you see that it's a bit silly to be excited about making good time if you are lost.  However, if you look deeper, you will see a fabulous Biblical lesson in there and a chance to evaluate our communication with the Lord. How many of you have been so busy doing things that you haven't stopped to see if what you were doing was what God wanted you to do?  I can raise BOTH hands on that one!  I'm so busy doing stuff that I haven't even slowed down long enough to be able to hear God speak to me.  I think that's why sometimes He has to hit me over the head with my pillow at 4am as it's the only time I can be found without smoke under my feet! Sometimes it's a matter of doing so much stuff that I thought was a good thing but wasn't a God thing!  Sometimes I'm doing stuff that was a God thing, but after a while I can just hear the Lord up there saying something like, "I told you to do it ONCE for 15 minutes!  What are ya doin'?  It's been 6 years since I said anything about THAT!"   Meanwhile, back at the pillow, God's been knocking at my thick skull asking me to do something else for the 649th time! Ever feel like that?  In fact, don'tcha just feel wonderful when you get so much stuff done during the day.  When you can cross 15 things off your "To Do List" even though several others didn't get "Ta Done"?  I feel so powerful and accomplished UNTIL...  Then you get the wrap on your noggin from the Task Master upstairs who is wondering why you even listed numbers 1-14! So here I sit reminding myself to listen for the Lord's leading.  Hear His voice.  Pay attention to what He DOESN'T say to do and to keep seeking Him for continued instruction on things He has already layed out.  I dunno about you, but sometimes I'm a wee bit deaf!  I'm making such great time, that I don't know I'm lost.  How 'bout you? ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ JoJo Tabares holds a degree in Speech Communication, but it is her humorous approach to communication skills which has made her a highly sought-after Christian speaker and writer.  Her articles appear in homeschool publications, such as Homeschool Enrichment Magazine and The Old Schoolhouse Magazine, which also endorses her Say What You Mean curricula.  You can also find JoJo on web sites such as Crosswalk.com and Dr.Laura.com.  For more information on communication FUNdamentals and Christian-based communication skills for the whole family, please visit http://www.ArtofEloquence.com

Oh gosh – I’m in that pillow fight with you!

Hmm. I think you’ve hit the nail on the head for those of us who are “hard of hearing” workoholics. The good thing though is that He is greater than our flaws, louder than our noise (even with a still, small voice) and can speak to us even in the midst of the flurry. He is in the eye of the storm.

Very good thought as I’m reading this – this morning! Sometimes the most profound statements are the most simple.

Fabulous post, JoJo. This happened to me recently. I am working with a life coach and she asked me to list my life goals (of course a relationship to Christ was number 1) … then she asked me to list my to-do list for the day. Yes, the Lord was on the list but not too close to the top.

She asked me to consider what on my to-do list could more closely follow the Lord’s leadings… the answer was much more clear at that point.

Great post and thoughts to further consider…

    Wow!

JoJo, this is my favorite blog post of the year! Thanks!

I think that we all want to hear God for the new things, but why is it so hard to let go as time goes by? For me, I think that I am just plain short-sighted! I don’t see that when I must move on,it us always to a better and more amazing place!

Today, I join with you in seeking to always be seeking, searching and hearing God for what I pick up and lay down EACH DAY!

    Thanks for spurring me onward!

    Love ya!
    Cindy
