Cone of Silence

To end Nostalgia Week here on Communication FUNdamentals, I have a YouTube clip from a vintage show.  Get Smart was one of my favorite TV shows because it was GOOFY!  This clip is “The Cone of Silence” and demonstrates what happens when we put undue restrictions on our communication.  Enjoy!

So what happens when we put undue restrictions on our communication?  We don’t always get our point across clearly because we “miss it by THAT much!”

First Ten JoJoisms

Some of you who are following me on Twitter or are friends with me on Facebook know that I’ve been posting, what I call JoJoisms for the past several weeks.  JoJoisms are my observations about life.  They use language in a fun way as to reveal life’s sometimes hard truths in a humor-filled way.  Thought I’d post some of them here for Friday Funnies.  Here are the first ten.

JoJoism #1 No matter how many bobby pins you own, you always need two more.

JoJoism#2 Dusting is futile. Not dusting is…not so good either!

JoJoism#3 Ironing isn’t futile.  It’s an arm exercise.

JoJoism#4 Insomnia is God’s way of allowing you to get more done in a day.

JoJoism#5 Trying to be profound is like bringing your car to the mechanic.  It only happens when nobody’s looking.

JoJoism#6 I AM tall.  It’s just that the rest of you are Venti.

JoJoism#7 Midlife Crisis is having to reconcile gray hair and pimples.

JoJoism#8 Getting old’s not so bad.  The cold you feel from hypothyroidism is neutralized by the hot flashes from Menopause.

JoJoism#9 Just when your brain is old enough to house some useful information, your mind forgets where it’s stored!

JoJoism#10 It’s Friday. Do you know where you’re week went?

This Day in History: 1st Telegraph

I am pre -empting my “A Question of Homeschooling” series of articles this week for a word from This Day in History because it has to do with communication…  Tune in to Communication FUNdamentals on Wednesday when we will join our homeschool article series already in progress. ;D

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

There are many different forms of communication.  Words are just what is most often considered.   Many an invention has enhanced our communication experience and I’d like to tell you about one of them today.  You see, on this day in history is the anniversary of a significant communication event!

The first public telegraph message, “What hath God wrought,” was sent on May 24, 1844 by Samuel Morse in Washington to Alfred Vail at the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O) “outer depot” (now the B&O Railroad Museum) in Baltimore. The message is a Bible  verse from Numbers 23:23, chosen for Morse by Annie Ellsworth, daughter of the Governor of Connecticut. The original paper tape received by Vail in Baltimore is on display in the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.

Here’s a YouTube video of a documentary I found which has the history (and the two men) behind the telegraph and Morse Code.  I bet you didn’t know some of this.  I didn’t!
