It’s Communication FUNdamentals Week and I hope you’ve been enjoying many giggles over the last few days.  Laughter is essential and not only to the learning process as we were discussion earlier, but to our health.  They say laughter is the best medicine.  You should have several doses per day!

I love making people laugh.  I do it with my kids. In fact, my son has gotten so used to it that he often says, “Mommy, say something funny!”  No pressure or anything! ROFL

Well, in case you haven’t been reading my blog, my articles, my Facebook fan page, my newsletter or my studies, (shudder, the thought!) you know that I started a thing called JoJoisms.  JoJoisms are where I reveal life’s truths…as I think of ’em.  They are one liners with insightful commentaries on life.  Here are a few I wrote about communication:

JoJoism#18 “Persuasion is when you want someone to listen to you; annoyance is when they want you to listen to them!”

JoJoism#28 “I’ve noticed that the English language does, indeed, have gender words like they do in Spanish. For example, when a man gets grey hair, they call him DISTINGUISHED. The feminine form of that word is…OLD.”

JoJoism#29 “I’ve also noticed that if your dh is distinguished, chances are very good…”

JoJoism#49a “A reason is what I have for not doing something for you.  An excuse is what you have for not doing something for me.“

JoJoism#82 “The opposite of stop isn’t go, it’s pots.”

I’ll stop now before…JoJoism#107: “My mouth punneth over.” JoJoisms: Revealing Life’s Truths…as I think of ‘em!

It’s Praise Week

It’s Praise Week here at Communication FUNdamentals!

The Bible talks about praising God, and we should, for all the blessings He has given us, but it also talks about supporting and being a blessing to others.  Ephesians 4:29 says, “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.” Edifying means to build up.  God wants us to build others up, to lift them up when they are down, to support them.  This scripture also tells us we should do this in order to minister grace to them.  Grace means showing mercy, kindness and service toward others.   Here’s why this is so important.

I always knew how important it was to praise others, but recently my daughter brought to my attention an article that tells us more about why.  It says research shows Young People Prefer Praise.

“We looked at all the things college students love and they love self-esteem more,” says lead author Brad Bushman, a professor of communication and psychology at Ohio State University in Columbus.”

The article further stated that the students surveyed preferred experiences that boosted their self-esteem and cited things like getting good grades and compliments.  It went on to say:

Part of what researchers analyzed was the difference between “liking” and “wanting,” based on study participants’ self-reports. They said they liked the rewards listed in the study more than they actually wanted them, which Bushman says is considered healthy. However, the liking-wanting distinction was smallest for self-esteem, suggesting a stronger desire for it than the other rewards.

So not only did they like receiving these rewards, but they actually craved or wanted them:

“It’s about confidence in your ability to deal with life’s challenges and a sense of personal worth, rather than generalized praise and undeserved rewards.

The article suggests that craving self-esteem can be harmful to a society when it crosses over into narcissism.  However, I believe this is much more likely for those who don’t follow Biblical principles which say to put others before ourselves.

I wonder if this rise in young people wanting or even craving experiences or feedback that fills self-esteem needs is because society as a whole is just so much busier than it used to be.  People are working two jobs to make ends meet.  Moms are worried about their children running with the wrong crowd or having too much free time that they are scheduling many more activities than they once did.  Nobody knows their neighbors anymore.  Are we all too busy these days to take the time to pay those compliments we used to?  Do people today feel lost in the crowd?  Is life more complicated today making it less likely to feel we are doing well?  Does society push self-esteem too much?  Or is it that society teaches us to seek conformity rather than treasure our uniqueness ?  Are we looking for acceptance from a world that says we are just one of the crowd?  Or does society no longer believe in a God who treasures each individual created with love?

What do you think?

Words that bug you

FuzzySpider11Insects are little pests in our homes.  They don’t really belong there and they just annoy us as we have to deal with them either one at a time or, heaven forbid, in swarms!

Unnecessary words are the same way in our communication.  Ever talk to someone who takes the long way around a conversation?  Someone who walks around the block a bit before he finally spits out what he wants to say?  Ever in a hurry and need an answer to a question quickly but the person you happened to ask has swallowed a dictionary?  Does it BUG you?  LOL

Sometimes we need a “Just the facts ma’am” moment, but we live in a “let me tell you all about it” world.  FDR once said “Be sincere; be brief; be seated.”   Sometimes a good idea for more than making speeches. ;D

Ms Pac Man on this week’s Friday Funnies!

If you’ve listened in to Grace Talk Soup in the last few weeks, you’ll know that my co host, editor and dear friend, Carla Ives, is going through a tough time right now.  Her husband was diagnosed with cancer and it’s already been a long haul for her family.  Ray, just went in for a proceedure that will tell them how far the cancer has spread and then they will be deciding on a treatment.

Carla has a fabulous sense of humor and a very active imagination.  She wrote one hilarious blog post about her feelings and I thought it would make a perfect Friday Funny for Communication FUNdamentals.  It is hysterical but it is also a testament to how God gets you through and how you can use communication as a means to help you heal.

Ray and Carla have been blogging about his cancer experience to help others who are going through a tough time whether it be health related or not.  Take a few minutes and read her post.  You will laugh and be inspired!

NOTE: A God thing!  I designed a graphic for the cancer cells that she beats up in her imagination.  Carla told me they look very much like what she pictured!

If you want to hear more from Carla, AKA Ethel the Editor, tune in to Grace Talk Soup Thursdays at 8am PST/11am EST.
