Happy Birthday Yogi Berra!

Tomorrow is the birthday of Lawrence Peter “Yogi” Berra (born May 12, 1925).   Yogi was sometimes insightful and always funny.  Here are a few of his most famous quotes.

Always go to other people’s funerals, otherwise they won’t come to yours.
A nickel ain’t worth a dime anymore.
Baseball is ninety percent mental and the other half is physical.
Congratulations. I knew the record would stand until it was broken.
Half the lies they tell about me aren’t true.
I just want to thank everyone who made this day necessary.
I never said most of the things I said.
If people don’t want to come out to the ball park, nobody’s gonna stop ’em.

Add yours here!

Have you had your Yogiism today?

Yogiisms are, of course, famous sayings by Yogi Berra.  Many of the things he has said seem silly at first glance, but upon further inspection, are actually brilliant!  Take a look at this one:

You can observe a lot just by watching.” -Yogi Berra

One of the problems in communication is that we don’t always slow down long enough to pay close attention to others.  We are so caught up in our own “stuff” that we don’t often take the time to really see others.  We may not notice their pain, a way we can help, an opportunity to share and connect.  Yogi’s seemingly obvious statement is actually a pearl of wisdom, a pearl of communication wisdom we would do well to heed.  You can, indeed, observe a lot just by watching.

Are you making great time, but not sure where you’re going?

Are You Making Great Time, But Not Sure Where You’re Going?

I subscribe to a lot of fun things and several of them have quotes from the rich and famous.  Yogi Berra is one of my favorites because there is so much wisdom in his humor.  I don’t know for sure if he meant them all to be funny or if it just worked out that way, but there is much to be learned here.

Yeah, but we’re making great time!” — Yogi Berra, In reply to “Hey Yogi, I think we’re lost.”

I got to thinking about this quote of his and it struck me that there was even more wisdom in there than I had originally spotted.  At first glance, you see that it’s a bit silly to be excited about making good time if you are lost.  However, if you look deeper, you will see a fabulous Biblical lesson in there and a chance to evaluate our communication with the Lord.

How many of you have been so busy doing things that you haven’t stopped to see if what you were doing was what God wanted you to do?  I can raise BOTH hands on that one!  I’m so busy doing stuff that I haven’t even slowed down long enough to be able to hear God speak to me.  I think that’s why sometimes He has to hit me over the head with my pillow at 4am as it’s the only time I can be found without smoke under my feet!

Sometimes it’s a matter of doing so much stuff that I thought was a good thing but wasn’t a God thing!  Sometimes I’m doing stuff that was a God thing, but after a while I can just hear the Lord up there saying something like, “I told you to do it ONCE for 15 minutes!  What are ya doin’?  It’s been 6 years since I said anything about THAT!”   Meanwhile, back at the pillow, God’s been knocking at my thick skull asking me to do something else for the 649th time!

Ever feel like that?  In fact, don’tcha just feel wonderful when you get so much stuff done during the day.  When you can cross 15 things off your “To Do List” even though several others didn’t get “Ta Done”?  I feel so powerful and accomplished UNTIL…  Then you get the wrap on your noggin from the Task Master upstairs who is wondering why you even listed numbers 1-14!

So here I sit reminding myself to listen for the Lord’s leading.  Hear His voice.  Pay attention to what He DOESN’T say to do and to keep seeking Him for continued instruction on things He has already layed out.  I dunno about you, but sometimes I’m a wee bit deaf!  I’m making such great time, that I don’t know I’m lost.  How ’bout you?
