It’s Innovation/Discovery Week!
Today is Columbus Day which is celebrated annually on the second Monday of October and remembers Christopher Columbus’ arrival to the Americas on October 12, 1492. His travels to America was a testiment to innovation and discovery so I’ve declared this week to be innovation and discovery week here on the Art of Eloquence blog. I can do that; it’s my blog! ROFL
Today I’m going to share a few innovations of my own, but before that let me tell you what’s coming up this week:
On Wednesday, I’ll have a post celebrating another innovation, the anniversary of the very first two way phone conversation. If you’re a homeschooler, you’ll love this one as I have a video coming explaining how this kind of old technology worked.
Innovation is not only important to science and technology, but to communication. Putting something in a unique way helps to gain people’s attention and to keep it in order to get your point across. Storytelling is a great gift and entertaining to your listeners/readers. In business, this is called your Unique Selling Point. Humor is often innovative, finding new ways to talk about old subjects.
Since Friday is English Language Day, I’ll have a fun video for you of a 102 y/o man explaining in his own style, just how silly the English Language is.
So here, now, is my innovative and humorous attempt to explain some of the unique things I see about language:
Happy Columbus Day! Have an innovative discovery today.

It’s Dr. Seuss Week
Dr. Seuss’ birthday is this Friday. He would have been 108 years old. As many of us did, I grew up with Dr. Seuss books and so did my children. They were a fun way for kids to want to learn to read. They had two of the things kids love most: rhyme and nonsense. Silly words with silly pictures, odd situations and strange creatures enticed us all.
This week on the Art of Eloquence Communication FUNdamental’s blog, we will be celebrating silliness and creative play that fosters better education (specifically communication) and remembering Dr. Seuss.
Part of the reason Dr. Seuss was so effective was because he included humor and creative play into the learning process, an idea Art of Eloquence incorporates into its communication studies. Almost all of my articles use humor. Some share how humor is important to communication. One article shares how to use creative play to teach communication skills. Check them out and have some fun learning the Communication FUNdamentals of the Art of Eloquence!

Humor Week concludes today with our usual Friday Funnies…on steroids! Sometimes humor results from an accident in advertising or the notices we find on the products we buy. They have some element of humor, especially when translated into English as in this sign from Nokia.
The instructions and notices we find on products can be pretty funny. You’ve seen all the warnings that can be hilarious, but here is one I actually found that tickled my funny bone. We went to Red Lobster for Mother’s Day, I brought home a “doggie bag” that had these surprising instructions. While I was both surprised and elated that this container was microwave safe as I contemplated my lunch for the following day, I couldn’t help but wonder under what circumstances I’d want to reuse it. How many of you have always wished you could put your “doggie bag” in the dishwasher in order to use it again?
And then there are times when my homeschool mom side surfaces and I long to take a red pen and make the necessary corrections:
No, I didn’t, but someone apparently did.
Well, I hope you’ve had a fun week here at Communicaton FUNdamentals. Words mean things and effective communication means you’ll need to express your words well. Speech communication can be a complicated skill to learn and the English language doesn’t make it any easier, but remember our motto: if you’re not having fun learning speech communication, you aren’t using Art of Eloquence!
See ya Monday for some more Communication FUNdamentals!

The scale says more; my clothes, they tore.
I’m often winded at the store.
Though I’m not sure and it’s a bore
Now exercise is my new chore.
My legs are sore; I’m on the floor,
Endorphins are just pure folk lore.
Just shut the door; I want to snore
And with my bones I am at war.

I’m exceedingly happy to say
Because it’s such fun
