Ever run into someone who just doesn’t understand how to communicate effectively? On the job, ineffective communicators can frustrate their bosses, cause customer problems and potentially cost the company millions!

It may be a funny video, but studies show that poor communicators struggle in their careers and in their relationships.

Riddle: What is it?

This week’s Friday Funny is a riddle.  See if you can figure it out:

It gives me orders or tells me nothing.
It butters me up or it insults.
It  has a point yet it makes no sense.
Uses too many words or also none.

It’s an annoyance, but also funny.
“I” cannot do it, yet “it” will not stop.
I try to stop it, but it keeps coming.
I tire of its cunning.

What is it?

You can post your answers here or post this riddle and your answer on your own blog with a link back here.  I’ll post the answer in a few days. Check back to see if you were right.

[NOTE: The answer is now in my comment to this blogpost]

A Little Biblical Word Fun

You read so many posts with foul language that it often surprises me to see things like this.  In fact, it so tickled me purple, that I just had to share them today for Friday Funnies here on Communication FUNdamentals.

This line was posted by a Twitter friend.  I looked it up and found that there are Tshirts with this line and a series of blog posts where it was discussed.

“Heck is where people go who don’t believe in Gosh.”

In my internet travels, I came across a similar quote on several other blogs:

“Will I go to Heck if I don’t believe in Gosh?”

Actually, the Bible tells us that those who believe in Gosh will not be darned to heck, but will have everlasting life.

Customer NONservice?

Customer NONservice?

My daughter called me at work to say I was to phone Ian at my bank. The customer service operator asked me what Ian’s last name was and I explained that he hadn’t left his surname. When she asked for his department, I said I didn’t know.

“There are 1500 employees in this building, ma’am,” she advised me rather curtly.

After a few more brusque comments, I asked her for her name.

“Danielle,” she said.

“And your last name?” I asked.

“Sorry,” she replied, “we don’t give out last names.”

Baby Babble

This is adorable though I can’t help but relate it to adults when we are communicating with others, thinking we are clear.  We know what we mean, but we may not be getting through to others who don’t understand.  It happens every day with our family, friends and business associates. Most of the troubles in life stem from misunderstandings.

It takes much more than knowing what you’re saying to be understood!  It takes the Art of Eloquence!

Bad Baby Names

crying-babyMy brother and his wife are having their second baby.  It’s a boy.  They have asked that the family keep the name suggestions to ourselves.  I guess we all got a bit overwhelming with the suggestions for their first child and they’d like to do this one SOLO.  Here’s what started the whole family naming ritual…

We already had a name picked out if our first child was a boy:  Christopher Ryan.  And it was supposed to be a boy.  She was supposed to be a boy.  The doctor told us she was a boy, but on the off chance she wasn’t a boy, we needed a girl’s name!

My folks, well actually my mom, was a HUGE help in naming our daughter.  You see…what my husband called “traditional”, I called BORING and what I called “unique”, he called WEIRD!  I was eight months pregnant and it was apparent that, unless we found something soon that was not weird or boring, Baby Girl Tabares was going to appear on her birth certificate! Thankfully my mom had just seen an episode of L.A. Law where “Ann Kelsey” married “Stuart Markowitz” and had a baby: “Kelsey Markowitz”.  Kelsey was apparently unique without being weird.

Reminiscing about naming our daughter, we remembered a suggestion my father had for us, just in case we didn’t like Christopher for a boy.  It’s been a family joke for 19 yrs and I thought you might get a kick out of it today for Friday Funnies.  It helps if you say it with a New York accent:

Horace Morris Tabares

Do ya think they have a support group for this?

Can you spot the error?

Yesterday on Grace Talk Soup, I was talking about how seriously the scribes were about copying the Bible and how amazingly accurate it is.  I mentioned how difficult it is to proof your own work and how even with a good editor, it’s hard not to find an error.

I shared how my daughter found some errors on Stanford University’s website.  What I didn’t have time to mention is this very funny picture we found of one of the SAT prep books we considered purchasing for her.

Can you spot why we didn’t?

When insults had class

There was a time when men disagreed using intellect and humor to banter back and forth.  Much of it was all in fun.

“I am enclosing two tickets to the first night of my new play, bring a friend… if you have one.”   – George Bernard Shaw to Winston Churchill

“Cannot possibly attend first night, will attend second… if there is one.”
– Winston Churchill, in reply
