Birthday Bash: 11am-Write Integrity Press

Tracy Ruckman from Write Integrity Press will be sharing on the Art of Eloquence Facebook fan page this Birthday Bash half hour.  Here is what she is offering as a prize for this half hour’s contest:

Which Witch? is for middle-grade readers.

It tells the story of kids in public school who form a Christian club and combat witchcraft that is trying to take root in their school. It is a very powerful book.

We screened it with parents and kids before we published it, and the parents thought it might be “too churchy” while the kids didn’t think that at all. The kids made comments like, “It taught me how to stand up to bullies, and how to pray for my class when bad things happen.”

To win this prize, you will need to post a comment to this blog post answering this question:  Share how important you believe 1Peter 3:15 is to a Christian form the scripture listed on our Faith page!  For an extra chance to win this prize, list one of the two JoJoisms posted on this page.  (HINT: Only one is listed as a JoJoism. The other is just part of the text.)

Birthday Bash: 10am -Heritage History

Teresa Roth from Heritage History will be sharing on the Art of Eloquence Facebook fan page this Birthday Bash half hour.  Here is what she is offering as a prize for this half hour’s contest:

Of all the stories which every child should know those from the Bible should be first. They are part of the instruction of the youth that cannot be neglected without a serious omission in his culture and development.

The author of this volume has tried to write the great story of the people of Israel so that children can understand it and love it, without simplifying the words of the Bible into too familiar a style. He has adhered wherever he could to the very words of the Bible but at times has not hesitated to change them in order to strengthen the telling of the story.

It is hoped that this volume will fill a long felt want for the nursery where the Bible story is a fitting end of the day; for the Sunday school where young children need to be told in simple words the story of the heroes of whom they are studying; for the every day school where the Bible is too much neglected and whose stories should be included among those that belong to the inheritance of every child; for the story teller everywhere who seeks for those great narratives that at all times are worth telling.

To win this prize, you will need to post a comment to this blog post answering this question:  Name two of the roles ineffective communication can play in elementary students’ lives that are listed on our Elementary page!

We’ll be picking a winner from among the correct answers and contacting you via email so make sure you leave your email address on your comment post.

Guess Who Had a Facelift?

We interrupt our regularly scheduled blog article series to bring you this Art of Eloquence special report!

Guess who’s had a facelift?  Nope, not me.  Though, at 49, it might not be such a bad idea.  It’s Art of Eloquence!

Yes the brand new, redesigned Art of Eloquence website has finally gone live!  After months of tweaking, learning new technology, getting help from my web host and ANYone who’d listen, it’s finally here!

What do you think?  The design isn’t the only thing that’s new!

* Mostly Importantly: it’s much easier to search the site to find the things you want because we now have drop down menus all along the top of the site!  You can search our store by age, category or value packages.  Easily find our free resources, Facebook fan page and our free monthly seminars across the top.

* We have added our Birthday Bash info so you can check out the prizes we are giving away on November 1st right here on the blog.

* We have also added several new communication scriptures and quotes on our scriptures page!

* We have completely redesigned JoJo’s Articles!  They are now alphabetized for easy reference!

* One of the biggest changes on the site is the addition of our videos!  I’m in the process of recording more, but you can see the first few on the home page and some of the age group pages in the store!

PLUS, the home page features my 200th JoJoism.  Remember I said I’d have a celebration when I reached my 200th JoJoism?  Well…You may have noticed I skipped over that one and posted a few after that.  Here is that celebration!

We’d love your feedback!  Please leave your comments and let us know what you think.

A Discouraging Word

Home, home on the range….

Where the deer and the antelope play…

Where seldom is heard a discouraging word and the skies are not cloudy all day.

What is it about our home that makes it special?  It’s safe, secure and supportive…or it should be.  When  your home is filled with discouraging people (or your life is), it can be difficult to become rejuvenated, rested and ready to take on the day.  The rest of the world can be against you, but if those who are supposed to support us are negative, challenging and difficult, it can make life more stressful.

Do you have people in your life who are discouraging?  Do you have to deal with them on a daily basis?  There are several ways in which people can discourage us.

1. Not listening when we want to share good news

2. Not encouraging us to seek out a better life, situation, condition

3. Being negative or challenging every fact, word or concept that comes out of our mouths

4. Making it difficult to do what we need to especially during a difficult situation

5. Discouraging us from asking questions and, instead, making us feel dumb for asking

Sometimes other people aren’t the only ones in our lives with a discouraging word.  How can WE be discouraging to others?

1. Downplaying other people’s accomplishments

2. Pointing out how their ideas won’t/can’t work

3. Questioning every aspect of their plan before they have a chance to present it

4. Making them feel like they are swimming upstream when having a conversation with us

5. Shooting down their ideas before you’ve even heard them.

6. Not giving them the time of day to listen

“Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.” Colossians 4:6

How many times have we had a discouraging word for others and not even have noticed that we were making things difficult for them?  Were we just too busy with our own lives to listen to Jim when he shared what was troubling him?  Did we fail to take the time to build him up, support him?  Did we allow Angela to speak her mind before we shut the door on her because the first words out of her mouth didn’t sound interesting enough?  Did we brush off little Johnny because he couldn’t get the words out fast enough and we had better things to do?  Did we make only a minimal effort to show appreciation to Mrs. Jones for all her help with the church picnic?

Sometimes we simply don’t realize how our half-hearted “thank yous” and hurried “that’s nices” feel to the one on the receiving end of our harried communication unless we, ourselves, have been the recent victim of a discouraging word.  May we always remember the words of our Lord: “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.” Ephesians 4:29

Tomorrow’s my birthday…

Tomorrow is my 49th birthday and next year I’ll celebrate 50 years…half a century on this planet.  Hard to believe it’s been that long.  Seems like just yesterday I was 12.  Time goes by faster when you’re old.  lol  When I was 12, it seemed like it took 12 years before it was my birthday again.  Now that I’m 49, it seems more like 12 minutes.

Things change as we age; our perceptions are only one of those things.  Times have changed.  Communication has changed.  The technology with which we communicate has changed.  I shared my thoughts on how communication has changed in the last 50 years yesterday on TalkShoe.   I shared how we communicate differently when we get older too.  Here is the link to the audio if you missed the live seminar.

As many of you know, I’ve written a JoJoism or two about aging.  Here are just a few:

JoJoism#17 Age is just a number. So after 50, I’m going to begin counting backwards. I wonder how long it’ll take me to pass my kids on the way down?

JoJoism#33 Don’t think of them as grey hairs; think of them as nature’s highlights!

JoJoism#60: ” I’m a year older today. Then, again, I am somewhat older than I was before I said so.”

JoJoism#137 “The secret to long life is…don’t die so young.”

JoJoism#150 “We are born with a finite amount of energy. Unfortunately, by the time we figure this out, we’re in our 40’s and forced to conserve.”

JoJoism#152 “Then I’ll huff and I’ll puff and…that’s why I don’t exercise anymore.”

JoJoisms: Revealing Life’s Truths…as I think of ’em!

Art of Eloquence Facebook Party-November

Last week I had the honor of co hosting a 15 minute segment of the Homemaking 911 Facebook party on Thursday night.  I have seen postings for Facebook parties in the past several months and had considered it as an alternative to having our regular audio party on TalkShoe, but I had never been to one until last week. It was such fun!

So now we have decided to put on our very own Facebook party in order to celebrate Art of Eloquence’s 9th Anniversary in November.  Since Art of Eloquence uses humor to teach communication skills, we’d like to bring in some people who use humor in their business or ministry.  In order to make the most of this event for everyone who would attend, we’d like to ask that you all take a few minutes to answer five short questions.

1. What day of the week is best for you to attend a two or three hour online FB party event?

2. What time of day is best for you to attend a two or three hour online FB party event?

3. Who are your favorite funny Facebook friends you’d like to see present at the FB party?

4. What are your favorite blogs, websites and/or YouTube channels that use humor to present their family friendly ideas?

5. Who are your favorite people who use humor to present and share the Gospel with others?

Please post a comment on the blog with your thoughts and feel free to give us advice or ideas as you would like!  We’d love to hear from you.  Thanks so much for your help!  We’d appreciate it if you would be so kind as to forward this post to others you may know and ask them to put in their two cents worth as well.
