This week’s question:

Are you a Mommy, a Mom or a Mother?

JoJo’s Answer:

Have you noticed that your title changes as your children get older and depending upon whether they are trying to feel ever so grown up?  When my kids were little, I was Mommy.  When they got a little older, I became Mom.  For a short time my daughter referred to me as “Mother!”  And then there was the time when my daughter was about 3 and she learned to spell that I was… “M. O. M.!”

My daughter is 19 now and my son will be 10 in a few days soI think I’ve graduated to…Mom!  However, my daughter has a Facebook account and recently tagged me in a note where she was asked several questions about the first person who came up under each letter of the alphabet.  When my name popped up, one of the questions was, if I was a friend.  She said I was more than a friend because I was her mother!  I like that.  There’s more respect for your Mother than for just a friend, but Mom seems to denote more of a close relationship than does “Mother.”  Both my kids call me “Mom.”  So I guess I’m sort of a Mom-Mother.  How about you?

Are you a Mommy, a Mom or a Mother?

How many mom sayings do you say in a day

Monday Q of the Wk. Here’s how it works:

This week’s question:

I’m sure, by now, you’ve seen this video of Anita Renfroe’s “The Mom Song”.  It is a communication marvel and always a fun few minutes spent.  This illustrates all the things moms say during a 24hr period condensed into the three minutes it takes to play the William Tell Overture.

How many of these mom sayings have you uttered in the last 24 hours?

JoJo’s Answer:

They’re funny because our moms said them to us and after years of listening to them, they just pop out of our mouths from time to time as well. It’s tradition!  It’s habit, but if you think about it, it’s not always the best way to foster real communication with your kids.  If you’ve heard me teach my Mother/Daughter Communication Workshop, you know that the biggest issue is with the phrase: “Because I said so.”  It doesn’t explain a mother’s heart nor does it give your child the feeling you’ve considered his feelings on the matter.  It’s just an automatic response programmed in during childhood.  Consider the following exchange:

Mary: Hi Martha. How are you?

Martha: Fine, Mary. How are you?

Mary: Fine.

Nobody expects the other to say anything other than fine.  In fact, if and when someone does mess with the natural order of pleasantries, we are often uncomfortable and unprepared to respond.

Bill: Hi, Bob.  How are you?

Bob: Well actually my gout is acting up and I’ll have to get my bunions removed next Thursday!

Bill: (as he misses several steps…)  Uhhhh….???

So to answer the question, I’d guess on a daily basis I say a few of them though.  The one I say about 12 times a day is “turn it down”. Mostly that’s for my son, but sometimes it’s for my dh!  LOL

How many Mom Sayings have you uttered in the last 24 hours?
Please post your answers on your blog and come back here and put your link in so we can read it!  If you don’t have a blog, just post your answers here…Because I said so!  LOL

Know a Mr. Prove-It?

This week’s question:

Have you ever run into a Bad Conversationalist?

JoJo’s Answer:

I wrote an article several years ago called Six Ways to be a Bad Conversationalist.  In it I outline six different kinds of people who make conversation with them like swimming upstream: Mr. Prove-It, I.M. Oblivious, Me MyselfandI, The Reporter, Men of Few Words and The Storyteller.  Understanding these six ways people are a difficult communicator can help you be a better conversationalist.

Have you ever had a conversation with one of these folks?  How difficult was it to share your thoughts?  I have and when I was a young girl, I WAS one of these.  When I finally got over my shyness and I was comfortable enough to talk to someone, I was The Storyteller!  When I learned more about effective communication, I began to understand how much other people needed to share in the conversation and how much fun it was to hear the stories THEY told!

Have you ever run into a Bad Conversationalist?

What’s your communication personality?

This week’s question:

What’s your communication personality?

JoJo’s Answer:

I wrote an article several years ago called What’s Your Communication Personality?  In it I outline nine different types of communicators: Gabby Gloria, Shy Sheila, Bold Betty, Careful Carla, Amiable Annie, Analytical Andrea, Dynamic Darla, Negative Nelly and Positive Polly.  Understanding your communication personality can help you relate better with others.  Understanding how other communication personalities function can allow you to communicate more effectively with them.

Most people are some combination but primarily one distinct communication personality.  I am a combination of Gabby Gloria and Dynamic Darla with a little Bold Betty tempered by Careful Carla.  I love to chat and tell a good story and sometimes I am quite direct, but I try very hard to temper my exuberance carefully so that I don’t intimidate or offend.

Childhood’s Favorite TV Show

This week’s question:

Which TV show do you remember most from when you were a kid and why?

JoJo’s Answer:

What I remember most is watching the original Star Trek with my dad.  We would say the opening dialog together each show…”To boldly go where no man has gone BEFORE!”  My dad would point out the discrepancies in science.  We would discuss the social and moral implications of the week’s topic.  We would laugh about William Shatner’s acting ability.  We would look for the inconsistencies in plot and scene cuts.

It was my Daddy/Daughter time and it was special.  It’s not the silly things you do together, it’s the memories you make and the time spent talking and sharing and building a relationship that you treasure.

Which TV show do you most remember from your childhood and why?

What would you call your autobiography?

This week’s question:

This week’s question comes from a Twitter friend, Greta Perry.  If you’re on Twitter, follow her!  She’s insightful!  Here was her question: If you wrote your autobiography, what would you call it?

JoJo’s Answer:

I really had to think about this one!  My first reaction was to say something snarky like “Pre Shrunk” cuz I’m only 5′ tall.  Or perhaps “Goofball in Training” cuz I love to make folks laugh and I believe that humor is a powerful tool for both education and communication.  But ultimately I think I’d have to call it “Unlikely Witness” because God took a shy Agnostic girl from an Atheist home and Jewish heritage and molded her so that she is “Boldly Serving Up God’s Word with a Side Order of Grace and Humor!”

This week’s question:

What’s on your desk that shouldn’t be there and what does this say about your life?

JoJo’s Answer:

Nail polish.  I’ve been trying to find time to polish my nails for about three months now! I’ve been swamped with writing deadlines and homeschooling that I just don’t have much time for frills these days.  I guess it says that there are far more important things in my life these days than getting my nails “dressed up”…Either that or I have really bad looking nails!  ROFL

This week’s question:

Who are you?

JoJo’s Answer:

This is a question you will hear in various forms throughout your life.  It’s probably a good question to ponder and to find a wiz-bang answer to so let’s take this opportunity.  And as we do, let’s get to know each other better. You may be asked this question for many different reasons.  On a job interview, one of the most popular tell-tale questions is “Tell me about yourself”.  It’s also something they ask you on college interviews.  Additionally, you may be asked this question by a customer, a new friend, a neighbor, a teacher, etc.

This question can come in many forms:

  • Who are you?
  • What do you do for a living?
  • Tell me about yourself. (Which, I guess, really is a statement.)
  • What do you do?
  • What are your hobbies?
  • What do you like to do?

The answer to this question not only varies from person to person but from reason to reason.  It depends upon who is asking and why they are asking.

I’ve been asked what do I do often because some people recognize my name from Art of Eloquence or my picture from my blog.  In this case I usually say that I am an author and a speaker on communication skills and I might add that I am the owner of Art of Eloquence.com.  I sometimes receive a Facebook question about a friend request that simply says, “Who are you?”.  In that case I am someone who loves to connect with other homeschoolers and fellowship with other Christians. Occasionally I am asked to tell someone about myself in the course of getting to know someone like a new neighbor.  Here I am usually a child of God, a homeschool mom of two, wife of 22 years and a lover of humor, singer of songs and a goofball by nature.

Who are you ?

This week’s question:
What’s does your favorite
color say about you?

JoJo’s Answer:
jojo

As many of you could probably guess, my favorite color is PURPLEIt’s been my favorite color since I turned purple as a baby while on a hot car trip-or so my parents tell me.  There were no air conditioned cars back in ancient times!

I love purple because it’s a color full of depth and rich in pigment.  It’s not a wishy-washy color.  It states boldly who it is and what it stands for.  Purple is the color of royalty.  It’s not a luke warm color.  Purple is a crisp bold statement but it does so with class, don’t you think?  I love the color purple because I strive to live my life as a respecful yet bold statement of my values even if they might go against popular culture or current fads.

Tell us what your favorite color says about you!
