Great topic and one I certainly don’t have the expertise to answer. I do know that shy people can overcome their shyness and there are many stories about this happening.

I am deep down a very shy person. I do not like confrontations, calling people I do not know on the phone… and I would rather eat a bad meal at a restaurant than complain. But, I have overcome this to an extent. I will talk anyone’s ear off that I know (in person and on the phone)…I am great on one-to-one conversations, and have spoken, in person, to groups of upwards of 1000 before. I am now a public speaker, author and have a blog talk radio show. So…I do believe shyness can be overcome.

It becomes a self fulfilling prophesy. I know. I was incredibly shy as a child.

I’ve known many shy children and adults and in some cases I do think it’s lack of social skills. It’s easier to hide behind the “I’m shy” routine – especially if there’s a payoff involved – no one expects anything from me – I’m shy. It sometimes is a reason not to push beyond and force you to interact with people.
