Say What You Mean: Avoiding, Reducing and Resolving Conflicts
Conflicts Adversely Affect Our Relationships:
Almost all conflicts under Heaven are caused or are exacerbated by communication problems. Studies show that misunderstandings cause not only hurt feelings and anger, but often violence as well. Conflicts can destroy a marriage or a friendship. Misunderstandings can build a small disagreement into a wall that will not allow a relationship to continue. Mistrust, fear and pain often follow conflict and they can be formidable opponents even in the face of conflict resolution.
The Lord warns us of the incredible power we have as we communicate with one another. It gives us the power to build up and the power to tear down.
"Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof." -Proverbs 18:21
We have the power to bring truth as well as to shield it, disguise it, repackage it and manipulate it. God's Word has many warnings for us about the power of the tongue. I believe it's because there is such a capacity to be misunderstood which leads to conflicts.
Communication is a delicate balance. If you've ever had someone misinterpret what you said or if you ever misunderstood someone else, you know how delicate communication can be. When you combine fragile feelings, past hurts, unmet expectations, world view, past experiences, cultural differences and human interaction, you're bound to encounter discrepancies in meaning. The problem is that a slight misunderstanding has the capacity to grow into a conflict with the potential of blossoming a disagreement into a monumental argument.
Just knowing that our communication is a delicate balance will help us take care to be gracious with the words we choose, but it will not help us understand how to avoid, reduce or resolve them. This study WILL!
